"Something beautiful and inexpensive"

"Something beautiful and inexpensive" This lovely Krakow bon mot diversifies my set of iron quotes for every occasion and fits perfectly with today's topic of reflection.

A bit against myself, I want to say a few warm words about industrial interiors. Basically, I associate them with sloppy and lack of money, and with the Polish edition - additionally with the trashy architecture of the People's Republic of Poland, persistently resuscitated in various PRs intended for naive, western tourists.
The devastation of the war did not leave many post-industrial objects straight from Wajda's Promised Land, which a modern rebel could creatively adapt by throwing an intergenerational bridge. Nineteenth-century red-brick factories, old hospitals, stables, mills, barracks and other such attractions, which could house boutique hotels, restaurants and stylish offices, have mostly disappeared. What remains is the weathered concrete of socreal, vodka and herring in the newspaper, Dworzec Powiśle, the SAMu logo and a few poetic names: Jutrzenka, Zorza, Aurora - just right for the names of drinks. So nothing ...

Hip, Trendy and Low Budget

Although the new architecture lacks authenticity, there are numerous attempts to adapt commercial premises in the Loft style. Some quite successful. A private conspiracy theory tells me that it is the lack of investment power that is the key argument in choosing this and not another style. Installations winding along the ceiling, barely obliterated walls, no expensive floors and fabrics to decorate windows, simple furniture from local pine trees, no aroma - all this refers to the Krakow maxim mentioned at the very beginning. As in the song - back to no 1. Young people eagerly swallow aesthetic raw material and caffe latte served in a coarse inn at a dozen or so zeta each. And he does not miss grazing a la bourgeois ...

The fight between Lent and Carnival

A perverse fate made me the heiress of a tin hall from thirty years ago, the height of ugliness with a cottage / industrial provenance, typical of the period of Polish companies. It was followed by a need - the long-postponed expansion of a warehouse and office, previously housed in an even uglier building from the same era - the Industrial Chemistry Institute at ul. Rydygier in Warsaw.
The internal struggle to spend as little as possible, but for somehow to come out, lasted for a while. I was thrown inside and out. And this is to go all the way, demolish to scratch and build from scratch, and this is to use the resources as economically as possible and not even paint the facade. It came out - as always - in the middle. In order for the aesthetic sensitivity to suffer, you have to take the snake out of your pocket - if you have it - of course. You can't even make a loft for free.

The Look of Loft

It was helpful to browse Pinterest for inspiration. Architecturally neutral structures, adapted for office purposes, are not the strength of this portal, but something can be found, professional literature and - a little against ourselves - we waved an unpretentious projector. Visible roof structure, industrial steel glazing, invaluable in such cases low-budget IKEA, furniture of its own design and workmanship. The guys from the warehouse - in addition to the desk made of pallets and glass - promise home-made pallet tree covers in spring to decorate the parking lot. Authentic, industrial lamps from the Predom-Mesko Metal Works from 1979, completed and restored with a great effort of our own efforts, bring a specific quality to our new location. The spirit of socialist labor is entwined with capitalist reality in a timeless collage. And the working people are working ...

How did it go? You will judge for yourself ...
